Follow the steep southwestern slopes of Mount Kenya and you will find Nyeri, perhaps the most well known of Kenya’s central counties. Home to a vast community of smallholder farmers, Nyeri boasts members who vote on representation, milling contracts, and profit allocation. Kenya is known for some of the most meticulous at-scale processing that can be found anywhere in the world. Nearly perfectly sorted by density and conditioning at high elevations is the norm, and a matter of pride for generations of Kenyan processing managers. Ample water supply in the central growing regions has historically allowed factories to wash, and soak, and wash their coffees again entirely with fresh, cold river water. This meticulous work manifests in a well articulated cup, with notes of black currant, blood orange and crème brulee.
